January Jumpstart: Random Ramblings

Random Ramblings: So, you know that lull in the conversation? You’ve been chatting with your friend over coffee for a bit, but now you either need refills, or maybe it’s time to go, but you still kind of want to hang out and enjoy their company and keep chatting? Maybe that’s where we are now. What’s new with you? How’s your New Year starting off?  Anything particular you want to share? I’d love to hear about it in the comments, let’s chat!

I’ve been thinking about family a lot. The ones we are born into, the ones we make. For a long time, my strongest connections have been to the family I have created as I move through my life. When I was married it was my husband and his teenagers. It’s always been my BFF, almost from the moment I met her. There were times when it was my auntie and me, and times when it was my Berlin tribe. But you see, it hasn’t been my parental units in a very long time. I would say for much of my adult life, my relationship with my parents has been, shall we say, “problematic.” So many good reasons, so many reasons that probably weren’t good ones. But that’s how it was.

Recently, and I am not even sure how or why, I have a great relationship with them both. I talk to them on the phone and in texts regularly. I went to see them both once I moved back here to the US. My mom is great when it comes to bouncing ideas for my new apartment off of someone. She is good with colors and design and we chat every time I move a chair or pick a photo for the walls. My dad hasn’t quite reached that level yet, but after visiting him in November, now we text occasionally and have even had a few phone calls, where before, it was almost exclusively emails.

It’s nice. I am enjoying the sense of security and love of hanging with them. I am going to try to keep that going. Ironically, I am the only one of my siblings who has a relationship really with either of my parents right now. My sibs do talk to my mom, sort of, but they haven’t talked to my dad in a very long time. I am the oldest, and often they have said I am the favorite, maybe right now that’s true since I am the ONLY one who is even making an effort. That’s kind of a shame really.

So Lux went on a date with someone yesterday. I don’t know anything about her or about their date, only that “Yes, we had a very nice time. Thanks!” So, he is taking this non-monog thing seriously and I am here for it. It will be interesting to see how we all develop as time goes on.

Dex is on his way here for dinner. Making dinner together has kind of become our standard date night. It was even what we did for our very first date, I invited him here for dinner. We have gone out a few times since then, (thankfully our area of the world has been “safer” than some in these past months) so we’re not only “in hiding.” It’s been fun. We laugh a lot together and he’s a pretty great cook too so we enjoy that whole process. I just realized I haven’t asked him to be on the new video cooking with friends series yet! I’m gonna have to do that and see what he says!

I hope you didn’t mind my random ramblings today. I am trying to keep the habit of getting a post out there every day, so this is how I am getting it done. One random post at a time! Thanks for hanging in there with me!

Today’s photo is from my six-week safari camping trip through six African countries. I fell so in love with the sky! It was the rainy season and sometimes the way the storms rolled across the plains towards us was just breathtaking. I spent almost as much time staring at the sky as I did scanning the horizon for exotic animals! This is the Makgadikgadi Pan in north-east Botswana. I will share another from here tomorrow. It was pretty amazing! The photo was taken by my amazing photog friend Niklas Faralisch.

I am also linking up to Love Yourself- because this month of blogging every day, Diary Style, is kind of a healing mental process and if that isn’t loving myself, I don’t know what it is!

  1. I am glad that you have a good relationship with your parents. Any relationship takes effort. It’s like a job. And if you do not apply them, then there will be no relationship. The photo is very beautiful, hello to the photographer.

  2. Parents are not chosen and you will not have others. Therefore, build relationships with those that are. If it succeeds, then very well. Those who don’t understand this tend to regret the missed opportunities very much when they leave.

    1. While I am very grateful for the relationship I have with them now, I do not believe that just because you are related to someone you must have a good relationship with them, or any actual relationship at all if it is not healthy for you to do so. I am fortunate that we have gotten through those days, but for a long time I didn’t have a relationship with either of them because it was just not healthy for me to do so at the time.
